I have had my tegu Godzilla for almost a year now and everything has been fine until today. I but him in our tub for a normal bath like I usually do. After a little bit he started drinking the water, then put his entire head underwater and continued to drink. When he was done drinking he started to act distressed so I took him out and put him on our rug. He immediately started snorting out this clear mucus-like gunk and seemed to have breathing problems. He also took a huge poop on our rug that had some of the clear mucus in it, idk if that had to do with what was going on. This lasted for like 10-15 minutes. Godzilla is not snorting the gunk out anymore and his breathing seems to have gone back to normal, but im wonder what happened? Did I do something wrong this time? Has this happened to anyone else? Please help.

Hey Justin,

It sounds like a temporary thing. He just swallowed some water. Sometimes they go under the water for longer than they should. i always stay there and never leave mine alone in water. also, when you soak, just put enough water so it does not go over their head. If it was respiratory then you would have noticed it before the soak..It could also be that he needed to poop, sometimes that makes him act that way. Keep an eye on it for a few days. If you notice any labored breathing or hear sounds when he breathes, take him to a vet..Keep me posted and feel free to call me anytime..

My first Tegu was an adult when I adopted him. To bath him in the tub I only had enough water, ~2" so He could be washed and not swallow soapy water. He managed to anyway and had the same reaction. George was fine so when washing I support their heads so it will not happen.
