I have a B&W tegu that is almost 2 years old. I got him for for Exotic Animal Fest '09 which I hosted last spring with intent of selling him, but luckily he didnt sell and I got to see how amazing tegus are. When he gets old enough I'd like to breed him. When should I start hibernating him. I am kind of embarrased to ask this b/c being a biologist I should know, but I've never bred a lizard which requires hibernation.

It may breed within 2 to 3 years after you hibernate it. If I were you, I would not wait to long, as far as age of the Tegu, to hibernate it..Any other questions, I am available by phone and email....

Hibernation questions are always important..Don't feel embarrased about asking. I was lucky enough to have learned from the best!

I appreciate the info. The reason I felt ignorant asking this question is because I have raised so many species that I should already know, and answer questions others have on a daily basis. I just dont understand why a tropical species has to hibernate before breeding.

Hey, its because they are not Tropical..they experience seasons just like we do. Its where they are in reference to the Equator..

I'd really like to learn more about hibernating these animals.  I'm picking up a small group of B&W's (farmed babies) in a few weeks and am wondering how to prepare these young animals for breeding as adults.  I'm located in Ontario, Canada BTW.

Thanks for any help.
